Many companies and consulting recruiters want to know my salary expectations and/or salary history before offering an interview. I do not want to price myself out of a great job, or lose out by giving too low of a price. How do I politely postpone their request until after an interview, without sounding uncooperative?

It's a common question. I would let them know where you are today from a compensation standpoint, but reinforce the fact that money is only a "piece of the pie." Tell them that you are looking for an opportunity that will help you expand your skills and move your career forward, a position that is both challenging and professionally rewarding. Let them know that you are flexible from a compensation perspective for the right opportunity. That will allow you to keep yourself open to both position and salary. Then ask what the compensation range is, understanding that it depends on skill level.

More Questions:
Would I be missing a major opportunity if I pass on a job opportunity with a Big Six firm?

Do I need a bachelor's degree in IS or would a master's degree in computer science be sufficient?
