I've been working as an analyst programmer for 12 years. Over the last five years, I haven't kept up with the changes and haven't done a lot of programming. I've used Microsoft Access to design a few databases, but only for one or two users. I know a bit of Excel and Word. How do I get out of this rut? I want to move forward now and I have to get out of this job, but I'm afraid I won't get another analyst programmer job with the skill I have.

Make sure that you pursue all options at your current company before jumping ship. Are there development opportunities where you are today? If so, let your employer know that you are interested in gaining new skills that will in turn help your company grow. Your current company will be more likely to invest both time and money in helping you broaden your career because of your tenure.

Should I look for a new job while I'm working on my degree, or finish the degree and move on later?
