What would be the best way for me to improve my chances in growing into an IT management position? I've been working more that 10 years in the business world. I have two years of college education towards a bachelor's degree in secondary education. I'm totally self-taught since 1983 in DOS, Windows (3.x. & NT) and most of the popular business apps. I've also learned HTML and am now working in a mainframe environment using JCL. I recently worked for 1 1/2 years in PC support doing first-level support (help desk). I want to grow more in the direction of consulting for clients on how to improve their PC support/technology in general in sync with their business goals. All of my PC training has been on the job and I only have a few certificates for formal training I've taken. I'd like to go back to college and use the credits I have toward a degree either in computer science or in business management. What would you suggest I do?

At this early stage in your career, take advantage of the opportunity to complete formal education in MIS/computer science. Although your college may not offer condensed class schedules for IT, you will reap the benefits long term. A grounded IS background will open more doors for you throughout your career and help you grow professionally. Concurrently, make it known to your employer that you are looking to grow professionally. Take the initiative to see what other avenues in technology you may be able to explore while your gaining formal training. If your current employer will not open any new doors for you, continue to market your background and experience to other companies. You may find that an employer is willing to hire and train someone who is bright, enthusiastic and hungry to learn. In order to grow your career, you should be flexible to sacrifice compensation (in the short term) for the opportunity to learn new technology.

Does age matter when employers are looking at perspective IT professionals?

My goal is to become a VP in IT. Should I obtain the MSCE certification or go for a master's in IS?
