I am 40 with 19 years experience in the computing field, a bachelor's degree in business management, a bachelor's in computer science, and am on course to receive a master's degree in computer information science in May 1999. I am employed by a company that values further education but doesn't appear to value IT as a strategic asset. In regard to my next career advancement, I am debating whether to stay where I am to concentrate on pursuing a Ph.D. while I have the momentum of disciplined study practices or looking for a company that emphasizes IT as a competitive advantage. If I move to another company, I may need to postpone any further education due to the energy required to make the transition. My studies have been accomplished through their distance learning program via the Internet. If I could find a university that offered a similar program for a doctoral degree, then my potential relocation would be a moot point. I'm continuing to look, but have not found this opportunity yet.

I applaud your dedication to furthering your career; however, it may be the right time to begin looking at new opportunities with companies that value and regard technology as a critical component to the underlying success of the business. It seems you've proved your passionate and self-disciplined approach to learning; think about using those skills to identify a company that invests in technology. Hold off on the Ph.D. for now: reach out to nearby firms that will value your tenured career in technology coupled with your educational pedigree. By doing so, I believe you will move your professional career forward exponentially.

More Questions:
Is it still a good idea in today's IT market climate to stay with an employer for a few years to gain experience?
