I am an IT professional looking to relocate later this year. I am investigating companies and job opportunities to see what's available and who I would like to work for. I am finding lots of opportunities I am qualified for with companies I feel I would like to work for. But should I handle the search myself by sending out and posting my resume--or should I use search firms? Can the search firms really get me a better deal, or do they just take the time out of the hunt?

Great question. My recommendation is that you carefully identify two or three respected search firms to represent you. In addition, you should remain proactive in your search efforts by actively networking and keeping your ear to the ground with respect to opportunities. Search firms that are well respected in the industry usually have strong relationships with their clientele and will have the ability to push an interview with the right candidate--as opposed to trusting that a blind resumư and cover letter will do the trick. Furthermore, it takes the pressure off you when it comes to negotiating an offer. It allows you to represent yourself during a face-to-face interview without the stress of managing salary expectations at the same time. By working collaboratively with a search firm, I believe you will find that the process moves quicker and is more rewarding.
