I am weighing two job offers. One is with a new company involved in the telecom industry that will be doing new development in SilverStream/Java and other leading-edge stuff. Offer two is from a more stable (and profitable) company, and is primarily a Microsoft shop. Looking ahead, what would be a skill set to develop: Java and application servers, or C++/Perl/ASP, etc.?

Two respectable offers--what a great problem to have. Given the technology you mentioned, there is a market for both. It will depend, not on the technology, but on your preference. Are you willing to take a risk and go to a newly formed company where your impact may directly affect the success of the business? Or are you at a point in your career where you are looking for stability and a track record of success?

More Questions:
I'm looking to relocate. Should I search for jobs myself or use search firms?

What would be my best strategy to stay competitive in the job market for the next 10 years?
