I am a 50-year-old senior engineer who's supporting a corporation's telephone service. I have been in this company's telecom department for eight years. Previously, I was a software engineer developing C programs for a PBX manufacturer. I have a master's degree in math and computer science. I am now learning Internet (including but not limited to Web server and Java) and Windows NT in my spare time. In terms of career planning, what is my best strategy to stay competitive in the job market for the next 10 years?

You're on the right course. E-commerce is leading business initiatives in today's industry and will continue to do so in the future, leaving antiquated technology behind. My advice is that you continue to learn Web-based applications and take the opportunity to expose yourself to the business. If you understand the inherent value that E-commerce adds to directly affecting the business, you will have the edge. Stay on the Internet track and you will maintain a competitive advantage.

More Questions:
I'm looking to relocate. Should I search for jobs myself or use search firms?

What would be the best skill set to develop: Java and application servers, or C++/Perl/ASP, etc.?
