I'm in my mid-30's and have successfully transitioned careers from a field I took up in the military, to IT work; specifically network security. Two years ago I took a full-time security and networking position with a midsize company at what is probably the median salary level (high $50's) for this type of work in the Midwest. Two months ago, I received what I considered to be an astounding offer from a major corporation. Now my original company wants me back, again at a decent salary increase. Friends and associates are starting to tell me I'm overpaid, plus I worry about job hopping. My worry is about pricing myself out of the market. My forte isn't so much being the "ultimate techie" as it is being personable, technically flexible, willing, and intense. Is it better to remain a flexible do-a-lot person, or a totally focused specialist? Also, would I be hurting myself by making another move so quickly?

There is an argument for both. However, my suggestion is to move forward with the other opportunity. Compensation continues to move upward and specialization, particularly in networking and security, still shows strong demand. As for the job-hopping, I think continuity is important. If you can't see yourself with this new company for three years, don't go.

More Questions:
I've been approached to join a startup company as VP of technology. Do you have any advice how to proceed?

I've been pondering a return to corporate America after having worked as a consultant, but are my goals of high compensation and management opportunities realistic?
