I have over 20 years in the software engineering field, mainly in real-time, embedded systems and device drivers. I have been thinking about becoming certified as a SAP/ABAP4 and/or Oracle developer, since I see the hourly rates for those as much higher than my present area ($200/hour vs. $70-$80/hour). I understand that I would have it a bit rough until I get the first entry-level position in the new area, but I'm willing to do it if I am right about the money. Also, the money spent for the training and certification would not be a problem, especially if I can break into the field, Do you agree with my assessments? Should I go for it?

YES! You can always lean back on your current skill base while treading through certification. I also believe it shows a strong sense of maturity and direction.

More Questions:
Can I double my salary when I graduate, or will my present low salary hold me back?

I'm a jack of all trades, but a master on none. What type job definition should I be looking for?
