I've spent 25 years in the computer, networking, and IS fields and have worked in a number of areas, including software quality assurance, release engineering, technical support, engineering, and system administration. While in these areas, I have performed as an engineer, manager and director. The position that seems to elude me is a VP slot. As a woman, I wonder am I wasting my time, or should I settle for my director slot and be happy. My credentials include a doctorate, master's, and bachelor's degrees, all in scientific areas. What would you suggest I do to move forward, as it appears my present company has no room at the top?

Most people in your situation either leave frustrated to another role only to have that serve as an extension or resign themselves to the fact that the VP role is not in the picture. My suggestion is to launch a well-thought-out search focused on a VP role over the next 24 months. Look for industries that will embrace your experience, and take your time identifying the right opportunity.

More Questions:
Should I go for an MBA, which will take one year, or for a master's degree in computer science?

What are the prospects after getting a master's degree in E-commerce?
