Career Counsel

May 18, 1999

I've been out of college for a year and a half. I was offered an entry-level position as an SAP consultant with a Big Five firm. The position required relocation, but it was a dream to work for them. At the same time, I was offered a Web developer position through another company. I am doing Visual basic Script, JavaScript, ASP, and SQL 6.5. That company is also implementing PeopleSoft. Also, the salary was $25,000 more than the other offer. I have accepted the Web development position, but I still want to grow and work for a Big Five firm. Should I increase my technical experience or pursue an MBA? My main goal is to be a management consultant with good technical experience.

You made the right decision! Any Big Five consulting firm will hire you with your current skill base. The ERP vendors are being tested by the market as to who will survive in an economic environment that's being changed by the Internet. They are all now being challenged to show that their solutions can extend beyond the current enterprise to integrate with "outward facing" applications. An MBA would be a great addition to your personal package and I would recommend it strongly. Do it now; it will shape your career going forward.
