I am a 29-year-old LAN support specialist with five years experience supporting users in a Novell/Windows environment. I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and am finishing my master's in telecommunications. I want to move into the management and business side of IT; my long-term career goal is to become a CIO. Would you recommend that I pursue a techno-MBA to gain the required management and business skills, or would you recommend a management of technology degree?

You need to do two things to accomplish your goals. The first, and most important, is to utilize your current organization to migrate you into a different area of the company, such as application support. Also, I would pursue an MBA vs. any other techno-MBAs. Your current educational pedigree is heavily slanted to networks and telecom. Any other technical bend is going to indicate that your focus is just technology, not business.

More Questions:
Will the lack of a degree affect my marketability?

What is my likelihood of landing a job in the information technology field with only an associates degree?
