I've been a mainframe programmer for 15 years. I have been trying to branch out into
client-server technologies. Unfortunately, my company has been unwilling to give me
opportunities outside of the mainframe and instead hires new employees and consultants from
the outside to fill these positions. To develop my client-server skills, I have earned a master's
degree in computer science and an MCSD certification. I also worked through several Visual C++,
Visual Basic, and Visual J++ books, practicing extensively on my PC at home. I am also unhappy
with my salary of $70,000 per year. What is the best way to break into the client-server field?
You're doing it! A word of caution though: If you're unhappy with your salary now, you should know
that your may need to take a short-term hit to be offered a job doing client-server technology.
You are an expensive hire for a company that can hire a recent grad with two years experience in
the $40's and $50's. If you can stomach that, then my recommendation is to launch a job search
and be prepared to take a hit until you gain experience and can trade up.
