I recently changed from a technical public relations job stream back into the hard technical field. I started in telecom at the technical (hands-on) level, before retraining and moving into PR and business. I ran my own PR business for eight years and was successful there. In 1998 we moved to the United States (on the urging of my wife, who's from Texas) and I was offered a position of LAN/voice networks administrator. I love the work and am in the process of completing my MCSE. What should be my next step: more technical training or more business training? I want to be more involved in the business operations of my company and future companies I may work for.

The technical landscape and the business environment have changed rapidly since you moved out of technology. You'll need to really round out your technical foundation. By running your own company, your business savvy alone will be viewed as added value--but not if your technical skills are rusty. Much has changed since your early days, particularly in the infrastructure and communication arena.

More Questions:
Would a bachelor's degree in IS be a waste of time, or should I focus on an MBA with an IS concentration?

What additional training would I needed to break into IT after I finish my MBA?
