DigitalOcean Expands Developer Cloud To Singapore

Upstart service provider opens sixth datacenter, plans for new UK facility and more developer tools.

The secret to cloud success....
At the start of 2013, DigitalOcean ranked 568th among cloud suppliers. Then Ryan Bates' popular RailsCast information service on Ruby on Rails moved onto DigitalOcean, along with some documentation of the Rails open source project. Legions of developers followed. Virtual server prices for instances favored by developers run .7 cents to 1.5 cents an hour. Not sure where DigitalOcean ranks, now but probably in top 50-60 cloud suppliers.

There's no doubt Google has made headway into businesses: Just 28 percent discourage or ban use of its productivity ­products, and 69 percent cite Google Apps' good or excellent ­mobility. But progress could still stall: 59 percent of nonusers ­distrust the security of Google's cloud. Its data privacy is an open question, and 37 percent worry about integration.
