Explore is a great tool for tourists and locals alike. Regardless of where you are or what you want to do, Explore can help you choose from local restaurants, coffee shops, shopping malls, movie theaters, gyms, museums or hotels. Looking for a place to eat? You can narrow your search by browsing lists focused on local favorites, fast food or bakeries. The "Popular with Tourists" selection is helpful if you're visiting a new city. You can also search for food according to type of cuisine.

I am also disappointed that they removed the shortcut to Navigation. I'm withholding judgment on whether navigation (via my Android phone) is improved as I work though things like traffic and alternate routes.

I tried the new version and across the board it is much slower than the old version. So slow that it is unusable.

re: Google Maps Updated: 10 Cool Features
In theory, the picture your destination feature looks pretty helpful; at least you can know what you are looking for when you type an address into a location, unlike with traditional GPS. Also, searching for a restaurant by type of cuisine can be helpful when you are in an unfamiliar city and you have food allergies or limitations and are unfamiliar with the options that might be nearby.
