Companies are doing bigger business-intelligence deals to give the tools to more employees, but Cognos Inc. last quarter inked only seven contracts worth $1 million or more, compared with 15 such deals a year ago. Cognos execs say the company's sales-forecasting systems haven't kept pace with longer sales cycles. Fewer big contracts, combined with Cognos 8 shipping delays, led to an 18% drop in license revenue in the quarter.
