The small differences that vendors impart to their products differentiates them from competitors. So it's unusual when the application-server market leaders, IBM and BEA Systems Inc., say they're taking steps to erase those differences. IBM and BEA said last week they would set specs on how to handle data from heterogeneous sources and schedule running applications for IBM's WebSphere and BEA's WebLogic. Says Ed Cobb, BEA's VP of architecture and standards: "We want to make it easier for developers who aren't rocket scientists."
