Cray To Deliver Supercomputer To U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers
Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. has won an order to deliver its XT3 supercomputer to the computing center for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
MANHASSET, N.Y. Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. has won an order to deliver its XT3 supercomputer to the computing center for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This order is part of a multi-order award with an aggregate value of over $23 million that Cray has received from the Dept. of Defense HPC Modernization Program.
In mid-2005, the Army Corps Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, Miss., will begin operating the XT3 supercomputer, which has over 4,000 processors and performs over 21 trillion calculations a second (teraflops). The addition will more than triple the capability of the currently installed ERDC systems, which include a 64-processor Cray X1vector supercomputer and a large Cray T3E supercomputer.
Available to users around the world at all times, the ERDC supercomputing center enables the Army and the Corps of Engineers to carry out complex numerical simulations that support both military and civil engineering missions.
Besides Army Corps missions, the supercomputing center will also support DoD-wide research and development programs requiring supercomputing capabilities, including the "Challenge Projects," considered some of the DoD's most important computational projects.
The Cray XT3 supercomputer uses AMD Opteron processors connected via a high-speed internal network and is based on the Red Storm architecture co-developed by Cray and Sandia National Laboratories.
