Relaunching Our Discussion Group In Second Life

I'm very pleased to report that we're teaming up with one of the best virtual-worlds news blogs, Metaversed, to beef up our ongoing discussion group in Second Life.

I'm very pleased to report that we're teaming up with one of the best virtual-worlds news blogs, Metaversed, to beef up our ongoing discussion group in Second Life.

Starting Friday, we're going to be holding weekly Q&As with leaders in technology and business in Second Life and outside it. The meetings will be noon at the amphitheater at Dr. Dobb's Island. We'll also hold weekly open-forum discussions, with no special guests (except you, of course), at 6 pm on Tuesdays at the same location.

InformationWeek, in conjunction with Dr. Dobb's Journal, has been hosting twice-weekly discussions in Second Life for a few months now. They've attracted some of the best minds in Second Life to discuss business and technology issues in Second Life and outside it.

Likewise, Metaversed has been holding weekly Q&As with some of the smartest people in Second Life. Past guests have included speakers from IBM, Cisco, and Sun.

So it makes sense to bring the two groups together.

We're calling the series of talks "Geek Meets," which is what Metaversed has been calling its talks. That's a much better name than the one we were using: "kaffeeklatsches." (What idiot thought up that name? Oh, wait, it was me.)

Metaversed, run by Nick Wilson, a/k/a/ "57 Miles" in Second Life, is one of the best blogs available for keeping up with news on Second Life and other other virtual worlds, and I try to check it out several times a day.

To stay on top of the Geek Meet schedules, join either the InformationWeek or Metaversed group in Second Life. Hope to see you Friday!

Here's what Nick has to say about the partnership.

What: Geek Meet
Why: Discussion of business and technology issues in Second Life and outside it.
When: Fridays at noon SLT, with special guest speakers. Tuesdays at 6 pm, freestyle discussion.
Where: Life 2.0 Amphitheater, Dr. Dobb's Island, Second Life.

That's the first piece of news I have about InformationWeek in Second Life. I'll save the other news for another rock.

Just because the server market's in the doldrums doesn't mean innovation has ceased. Far from it -- server technology is enjoying the biggest renaissance since the dawn of x86 systems. But the primary driver is now service providers, not enterprises.
