Agreed. To some extent, I can see phablets cutting into the sales of proper tablets, but I still haven't seen a wearable device with mass market appeal that's actually ready for prime time.
Like IDC, Forrester is also a big believer in wearable technology, but several of their analysts emphasize that companies are still figuring out new interaction models for these new devices. That makes sense; you can't just dump Android or iOS on a tiny screen, strap that screen to a watch, and call it a day. But it's one thing to think about new interaction models; it's another to actually produce one. Is someone gonna get it right in the next year? Maybe, now that big companies are involved-- but as David points out, it's anyone's guess until some of the devices are actually revealed.
On a related note, I'm sure that Apple, Microsoft et al hope to increase tablet sales with their wearable devices. Smartwatches and similar products are necessarily going to have some standalone appeal, and due to personal finances, some people might have to choose between a new smartwatch or a new tablet. So in that sense, sure, wearable tech will take away some tablet sales. But I suspect the devices will also tie into other products. An Apple smartwatch will probably act as a companion in some ways with iPhones and iPads, and if the unified experience is strong enough, I could see it boosting more tablet sales than it takes away.
