re: Microsoft Office 2013 Built For Social Sharing
Although Microsoft's goal is clearly to make social pervasive throughout Office, I should note that I found a few holes in preliminary testing, using the Samsung tablet loaded with Windows 8 preview that they loaned me. The Office 365 social experience demos well, but in the process of trying to flesh out my news feed with more people I would like to follow, I noticed that option did not appear in some places where I would expect it to. For example, when searching the test instance populated by Microsoft personnel and other reviewers, I found that the People tab seemed to list only email contacts, not people I was following in my stream (another sort of contact). I could search and add new Outlook contacts from that portion of the interface, but there was no option to add those folks to the list of people I was following. Or if there was a way, it wasn't obvious.
This preview release is still months away from general availability, however, so there's time for gaps like that to be filled in.
Overall, I thought the effort Microsoft has put in to making SharePoint / Office 365 a more full fleshed social environment is paying off. Maybe the engineers from Yammer will be a good influence and help Microsoft get the rest of the way there.
