May 13, 1999 Oracle Keeps Its Promise Students at San Francisco's George Washington Carver School will find something new in their classrooms next week: 50 network computers donated by Oracle. The gift is part of Oracle's Promise program, through which the company has pledged $100 million in technology to schools worldwide. The Carver School will be the 100th to receive NCs from Oracle since the program's inception in 1997. An Oracle spokeswoman says Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown are both scheduled to help install the systems this Saturday. Gifts to 10 Chicago-area schools are planned for June, the spokeswoman says, with New York-area schools also on the list. Other cities that will receive computers for their schools include Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, and Washington. Globally, the spokeswoman says, Oracle has installed NCs to promote communication between Israeli and Palestinian schools, and between Catholic and Protestant schools in Ireland. The program is part of America's Promise: The Alliance for Youth, a national campaign chaired by Gen. Colin Powell. -- Dominick Calicchio |
