May 27, 1999 The Times Is A-Changing The New York Times Co. is taking another step toward the digital future. Last week, the publisher launched Times Co. Digital, a separate business unit consolidating nearly 50 Web sites, including the New York Times site, boston.com, New York Today, and Wine Today. Martin Nisenholtz, CEO of the new unit, says it translates the reputation the Times has established in print to the online world. "Users want to know they're accessing information of the highest editorial integrity at trusted destinations," Nisenholtz says. "This is what our new business unit will deliver on a global scale." The creation of Times Co. Digital follows a similar move by the Tribune Co., publisher of the Chicago Tribune, which unveiled plans two weeks ago to create Tribune Interactive, a separate unit to oversee online sites for the company's newspaper, television, and other holdings. Will Times Co. Digital include the launch of a "tracking stock" for the company's online endeavors? A company spokeswoman says news on that front isn't quite yet fit to print. -- Tanvi Chheda |
