May 28, 1999 Quick Credibility The life expectancy for some new online retailers could be tied to how fast they can convince customers that their online transactions will be processed safely. That's why Wells Fargo Bank has teamed with GTE CyberTrust to create a transaction-assurance program called SureServer that goes live next week. Participating Internet retailers will display the SureServer logo, which will let customers verify merchants' legitimacy, says Michelle Banaugh, VP of E-commerce at Wells Fargo. Initial merchants will be those with Wells Fargo accounts, she says. Transaction data is secured via the Secure Sockets Layer protocol, adds Anne Marie Beasley, a product manager for GTE CyberTrust. She says GTE CyberTrust hopes to launch similar programs with overseas banks. |
