Making Tracks With Fiber

Old railroad ties and illegally dumped trash aren't the only things you'll find along the railways of North America. Canada's Worldwide Fiber Inc. is among the telecommunications companies that have formed partnerships with railroads to use miles of track as the passageways for fiber-optic networks.

This week, Worldwide Fiber signed agreements with Illinois Central Railway Co. and Canadian National Railway Co. to build the latest additions to its North American fiber-optic network.

In the United States, Worldwide Fiber says, it will connect Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans along Illinois Central's railroad beginning in September, and finishing in late 2000.

And a current project to connect Buffalo, N.Y., with Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City will be extended to Halifax, Nova Scotia, along Canadian National's railroad. The first phase is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of this year, with the Halifax extension completed sometime in 2000, the company says.

By the end of this year, Worldwide Fiber says it expects to have 8,500 miles completed of its planned 14,000-mile North American network.
