Office 2000: Customers Learn What's In Store

Sony Corp.'s not-quite-finished Metreon Entertainment Center in downtown San Francisco was the setting yesterday for Microsoft's launch of the Office 2000 suite of productivity software. But Microsoft president Steve Ballmer said the package should include everything business users need do "what they want, where and when they want, on any device connected to the Internet."

The suite will be available for purchase this Thursday, the company said, with business customers having already reserved 15 million licenses. A key feature of Office 2000, Ballmer said, is the concept of the "digital dashboard," which will let individuals set up views of personal, business, and Internet information all on one screen, according to their view of what's most useful at the time.

Testimonials for the new suite were offered in person by Larry Leibrock, associate dean and chief technology officer at the University of Texas in Austin, and Alex Hankin, and MBA candidate at the school. Hankin demonstrated how numerous people working on a team project could access and comment on the most updated versions, regardless of location or the time they joined the collaboration. Others early testers, represented on video, included CIO Keith Powell of Nortel Networks, and officials at Positively You, a small book retailer in Iowa, and Maverick Productions, a media company in Seattle.

Ballmer also said Microsoft has launched partnerships with Verio Inc. and Concentric Network Corp. to provide Web-collaboration services for Office 2000.

Following Ballmer's presentation, guests toured the MicrosoftSF retail store, which will be part of the Metreon retail and entertainment complex.
