IT Plays The Networking Game

Does it sometimes feel like networking is all work and no play? It no longer has to. Siemens Information and Communication Networks now distributes PlaNet, a computer game that helps IT staff simulate the planning and building of an integrated voice-data network capable of carrying telephony and Internet services.

Modeled after PC games like SimCity, PlaNet simulates actual business conditions: End-user and market demands change, networks clog, bandwidth dissipates, technologies evolve, and competitors lurk everywhere. Naturally, Siemens products are the most effective weapons for fighting back.

There are two levels of difficulty-beginner, or "CEO," and expert, or "Engineer." Siemens uses PlaNet as a marketing tool at trade shows, but the company soon plans to make the game available to customers and product trainees.
