June 16, 1999 Rutgers Retools Classes For IT IT is no longer considered the domain of computer science and engineering students at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. With Rutgers upgrading its IT infrastructure under its RUnet 2000 program, plans are under way to make IT part of the everyday experience for students in a wider range of disciplines--including communications, library studies, geology, and languages. The school recently allocated $391,750 in grants to various departments to help them get wired. Rutgers also wants students to become familiar with IT earlier in their college careers, says Dr. Joseph Seneca, the university's VP for academic affairs. "Our existing courses will be technologically enhanced," he says, and "faculty will creatively and effectively use the technology for better learning of discipline material, as well as for developing skills and sophistication in the Web and software." Included in the plan are construction of virtual biology labs, specialized software for engineers, an Internet laboratory for geography courses, and IT enhancements for first-year communications courses. |
