June 17, 1999 Monster Ambitions MonsterBook.com, publisher of an Internet directory of small and midsize online retailers, has embarked on the newest phase of a plan that it says could revolutionize electronic business. By this fall, the company plans to help small businesses not only set up and run E-commerce sites, but also to accept MonsterMoney, a digital currency that will let each business' customers make purchases online without disclosing a bank account or credit-card number. "We hope to make E-commerce more available to small businesses," says William McKee, co-owner and co-founder of MonsterBook.com. As part of its plan, MonsterBook.com says it will mail out a print version of its directory next month to 1.2 million subscribers. It also plans to launch Web sites where subscribers can open and track their MonsterMoney accounts, initiate transactions, and access E-business sites. MonsterBook.com officials won't disclose details about the currency technology, saying only that a formal announcement is being planned for later this year. --Ashlee Vance |
