August 12, 1999 Tupperware Gets Virtual The threat of disintermediation from online selling has reached America's living rooms. Tupperware Corp. says it will sell a limited selection of its famous food-storage containers on its Web site. Evidently, party commerce, unlike electronic commerce, is on the decline, due partly to a greater percentage of women working full time. But the Web site (www.tupperware.com) will also support the company's sales agents, Tupperware's main selling channel since 1951, with party-planning advice and other tips for would-be hosts and hostesses. The site even has an area with templates for creating party invitations--including those sent via E-mail. |
