Electronic waste may only represent one percent of the junk we throw away, but it contributes 70 percent of the toxic materials (like lead and mercury) found in landfills. The Lower East Side Ecology Center in New York regularly schedules an Electronic Waste Recycling Day where New Yorkers can deposit out of date printers, computers, and cellphones to be disposed of safely .
