Just as scientists began testing CERN's Large Hadron Collider in September, hackers made a mockery of the European lab's network security. Days later, a liquid helium leak brought research to a halt; repairs should be completed by spring 2009. The collider is a massive underground particle accelerator designed to conduct particle physics experiments. Scientists hope to use it to test the Big Bang theory of the universe's origins and other beliefs about how matter and mass formed. The collider is so huge, that staff use bicycles to traverse the 17-mile, circular tunnel beneath the border between France and Switzerland.

NASA found ice on Mars, CERN prepared to study black holes, but had a setback. Microsoft gave us a peek of Windows 7, FaceBook fought spammers and won, sort of. Bigfoot turned out to be bogus, again. Oprah Amazon's Kindle a boost, and the world said hello to the first Internet president-elect, Barack Obama, and goodbye to the Spam King and Arthur C. Clarke.

Product managers who showed off an early version of the device in Barcelona on Dec. 2, called it the "Facebook Phone."

The iPhone Maps application from Google now supports Street View. The map in a circle at the lower right returns you to Google Maps view, the white cone shows the direction your camera is facing.
What's In The iPhone 2.2 Software Upgrade?
Apple released version 2.2 of the iPhone firmware on Friday. It includes upgrades to Google Maps, enabling Street View and walking and public transit directions and more. The software also includes small improvements to e-mail, the Web browser, and the ability to turn off auto-correct.
