Livermore National Ignition Facility
Livermore National Laboratory has complete the world's largest laser. Called the National Ignition Facility, the 400-foot-long laser bay shown is one of two that make up the stadium-size NIF. The facility is capable of focusing 192 individual laser beans on a spot about the size of a pencil eraser, creating a huge amount of energy, know as fusion ignition. The NIF is to be used to help ensure the reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons.
