Sanjeev (Sonny) Bhagowalia, CIO, Department of Interior

As CIO of the Department of Interior, Sonny Bhagowalia manages $1 billion in annual IT spending, supporting 13 agencies and offices in 2,400 U.S. locations.

Interior recently put in place a new program management office to improve IT project performance, worked to improve its cybersecurity posture, and began transitioning to the Networx network services contract.

A member of the Federal CIO Council, Bhagowalia led the development and May 2009 launch of the Data.gov site, with its searchable catalog of more than 110,000 data sets.

In his previous job as CIO of Indian Affairs, Bhagowalia reconnected agency bureaus and offices to the Internet within security parameters after a court order required that agency computers be unplugged from it for six years because of security concerns. His background includes stints in IT management with the FBI and Boeing.
