Chris Willey, CTO, Washington, DC
Chris Willey has big shoes to fill. His predecessor as Washington, D.C.'s top tech official is none other than federal CIO Vivek Kundra.
Like Kundra, Willey advocates open platforms and cloud computing. Washington recently released a new bus location application called Where's My Bus? that was built on Google App Engine. The hope is that interested developers will extend the system. This year, Washington held the second version of its "Apps for Democracy" contest, in which developers compete for cash prizes by writing software that helps city government, local businesses, and residents by leveraging government data and services. The contest focused on use of the city's new Open 311 API, which lets developers access the city's non-emergency service request system. Under Willey's leadership, the city is also expanding the number of free wireless hotspots and its use of cloud computing with Google Apps and Intuit QuickBase. |
