Department of Health and Human Services CIO Michael Carleton, along with federal healthcare IT coordinator David Blumenthal, is at the center of one of the Obama administration's top priorities: healthcare IT.
As CIO and deputy assistant secretary for IT, Carleton will oversee about $2.3 billion in IT spending this year, and much more if stimulus money is included. That includes an ongoing overhaul of the agency's infrastructure, new cybersecurity spending under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an accounting system at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Studies, IT research and development at the FDA, and help building the nationwide health information network. Before joining HHS in 2006, Carleton was CIO of the General Services Administration, where he worked on implementing e-government initiatives, infrastructure consolidatio, and investment control and enterprise architecture efforts. |
