CIO Con-way San Mateo, Calif. CAREER TRACK How long at current company: 11.5 years The single career accomplishment you're most proud of: Completely transforming Con-way applications from antiquated 1970s architecture that didn't meet business requirements to leading-edge ones that mesh with the business. Con-way is built on the principles of innovation and efficiency, and doing something that put it ahead of the competition was rewarding and validating. Most important career influencer: Larry Thompson was the person with the greatest influence over my career to date. In my first job out of college, he was both my manager and mentor. He was smart and tough, and stood up for what he believed in. He told me I had a brilliant career ahead of me in IT, which was very encouraging when I was first starting out. Describe a major decision you've made during your career that you wish you could do over again: I once worked for a small startup that was ill-conceived and never made it. I wished I hadn't taken that job, but I realized that failure is as important as success in the learning curve. Still, it would be nice to have that time back. CURRENT ROLE Size of IT team: 700 3 top initiatives for current year: Key tech partners: IBM, Oracle How I measure IT effectiveness: We have a comprehensive scorecard that contains key measures and trends with indicators such as cost per function point implemented and supported, system availability, and cost per processing unit. While Con-way understands the universal importance of leading-edge technology as one method of improving margins, it's important to continually assess the additional value that each effort is providing the organization. VISION Best piece of advice for future CIOs: Be careful to ensure that IT plays a strategic role in the organization. Get a seat on the executive committee and make sure you're engaged in strategy discussions. View on offshore outsourcing benefits: We've had great success with offshoring application support, so we can free up our own people for development efforts. Offshoring is also a great way to handle short-term projects without losing staff focus on other important initiatives.
