The battle for online consumer market share is heating up. Internet search leader Google Inc. rolled out its Gmail service last week, challenging free E-mail providers MSN and Yahoo Inc., both of which are returning the favor by powering up their search technologies. Given Yahoo's impressive doubling of its first-quarter profits over the same period last year and its new ad campaign unveiled last week, not to mention Microsoft's considerable talent and resources, Google doesn't have to look far to find some serious competition.
