NASA scientists were "surprised" by just how close the similarities are between Mount Sharp, pictured here, and the Grand Canyon. The lower parts of Mount Sharp, which is Curiosity's eventual destination, are composed of rock strata about the same thickness as that of the Grand Canyon. And both have buttes and mesas.
