EMC unveils integrated document-imaging system

Static data like paper and film could be managed along with digital content, thanks to the integration of content-management, imaging, and workflow technology in EMC Corp.'s latest foray outside its storage-technology home base. The vendor has combined its Documentum Records Manager with a Web-based workflow client for document imaging and management. EMC Documentum ApplicationXtender 5.2 content-management suite for the Windows .Net environment will be available through value-added resellers.

"Customers realize the need for records management and digital archiving of records and load files from a single source," says Toby Bell, an analyst with Gartner. An early 5.2 customer likes the links between content management and medical records and says it could ultimately help with patient care. "We'll be able to take manual paper-based systems, index them with AppExtender, and manage them like electronic records," says Rhonda Anderson, a health-information administrator at the California Department of Developmental Services. "Soon we hope our clinicians could request microfilm from 20 years ago, and we get it to them in minutes."
