E-health record vendor NextGen's NextPen is based on Anoto digital pen and paper technology. However, NextPen is used to capture structured NextGen Ambulatory EHR data directly from pen and paper. A tiny camera in the pen's tip captures everything as it is written or drawn. When the pen is placed in a USB docking station, NextPen automatically fills the structured data fields in a patient's record.

An image of the form is also captured and can automatically be attached to the patient record, making it ideal for recording signatures and drawings. Among new NextPen features being demoed at HIMSS are improved handwriting recognition accuracy; sample foreign language forms; and history of present illness and review of systems forms.

In looking through the preview, the one that integrates w/ med devices and the pen technology look really interesting. Looking forward to the HIMSS coverage!
