Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We already discussed paper, and the obvious tip here is to have those blue bins for recycling everywhere -- at every desk and near every copier and printer. But the better idea is to reduce, so yet again, remind your staff to think before they print.
An item that could be recycled or reused is computer equipment. Go
here to see a clickable map for electronics recycling programs. Because it's not enough to recycle -- electronic waste must be recycled
legally. Some places have fees, and some don't. And be on alert since most cities offer a few days a year in which you can haul all your computer gear to be recycled for free.
Pouchet recommended looking at what comes into your building on a daily basis -- such as mail and freight -- as well as what goes out, like products you ship and waste. "E-waste is a big issue," he said.
Bonus, non-IT green tip: Don't use disposable kitchenware. Instead, encourage staff to bring in their own cups, mugs, plates, and cutlery, and even have them bring more than what they use so you can always have extras on-hand for guests to the office. A random assortment of coffee mugs is always a great conversation starter, too.
