Tomorrow will be my last day at Oracle. It’s been a great 5 years. By virtue of my position as architect for the Application and Middleware Management part of Oracle Enterprise Manager, I got to work with people all over the Enterprise Manager team as well as many other groups, whose products we are managing: from WebLogic to Fusion Apps, from Exalogic to Oracle’s Public Cloud and many others.I was hired for, and initially focused on, defining and building Oracle’s application management capabilities. This was done via a mix of organic development and targeted acquisitions (Moniforce, ClearApp, Amberpoint…). The exercise was made even more interesting

Never say never. VMware is about to join the OpenStack Foundation, a group initially backed by other industry giants as a counterweight to VMware’s server virtualization dominance. Intel and NEC are also on deck to join as Gold OSF members.

Just in time for VMworld, VMware is about to join the OpenStack Foundation as a Gold member, along with Intel and NEC, according to a post on the OpenStack Foundation Wiki.  The applications for membership are on the agenda of the August

Page 1 of 2 VMware's top brass Wednesday made sure its hundreds of partners gathered for the company's Partner Exchange conference understood the threat posed by public cloud provider Amazon in the software-defined data center era. Rallying partners to make sure VMware's virtualization stronghold extends into the public cloud, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger told partners that if "a workload goes to Amazon, you lose, and we have lost forever." "We want to own corporate workload," said Gelsinger. "We all lose if they end up in these commodity public clouds. We want to extend our franchise from

The floating application development laboratory called SkyTap is burrowing deeper into the VMware fold and making itself more useful to coders by supporting the Cloud Foundry framework on its eponymous dev and test cloud. The company, funded in part by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is also firing up new templates for SkyTap that allow for n-tier applications running in VMs created for VMware's ESXi hypervisor to be moved more easily between the SkyTap app dev cloud and private infrastructure or other production-grade VMware clouds.

The SkyTap app dev cloud runs atop ESXi hypervisors and includes homegrown code for snapshotting compute

As the end of 2012 approaches there is one clear takeaway about the cloud computing market – enterprise use has arrived. Cloud use is no longer solely hiding in the shadows, IT departments are no longer denying it’s happening in their company and legitimate budgeting around cloud is now taking place. According to the latest Forrsights Surveys nearly half of all enterprises in North America and Europe will set aside budget for private cloud investments in 2013 and nearly as many software development managers are planning to deploy applications to the cloud. So what does that mean for the coming year? In short, cloud use in 2013 will get real. We

As the PaaS market transitions from nascent to mature, a new opportunity is emerging: cloud services curation. Peter Sonsini, general partner at NEA, predicts that cloud services curation will help PaaS players broaden their reach and amplify their strategic impact within the technology landscape. The many benefits Platform as a Service (PaaS) bring to the enterprise are well known and well publicized — chief among them the ability for developers to build applications faster than ever before. But as this space begins to mature, a new opportunity is emerging for PaaS players that could broaden their reach and amplify their strategic impact within

The way software is created is in the midst of fundmental change. Agile, component-based software development are helping coders create applications faster and more efficiently than ever before, but the process has also introduced complex new risks and requirements. Four critical steps can help reduce those risks.

It’s slow going for the HP turnaround Meg Whitman is trying to engineer. The company pre-announced an $8 billion write down of the enterprise services business, but the softness in PCs, in printers, in servers, meant there was very little good news from HP’s Q3 earnings call.

Listening to Hewlett-Packard’s third quarter earnings call, you had to wonder if Meg Whitman was wishing she was somewhere — anywhere — else.

Nine months into her stint as Hewlett-Packard sixth CEO in seven years (that tally includes two

The hard truth for consumers is that using cloud services means they’re often at the mercy of their cloud providers’ security practices, perhaps even their HR practices. However, unless they’re willing to abstain from the cloud altogether, trusting their providers is often all consumers can do.

The story of the breach of former Gizmodo staffer Mat Honan’s iCloud account took an interesting turn today with news that the attacker was able to call Apple and convince a customer service employee that he was Honan. While hardly the breach of the century, the

Forking of open-source projects can be good or bad. Developers love freedom of choice but big customers fear lack of compatilbility. In either case the prospect of a Cloud Foundry fork is worth examining. The rumblings have been around for weeks but now they’re breaking the surface: Cloud Foundry, the open source platform-as-a-service framework faces a bit of an insurrection. Several vendors, such as AppFog, ActiveState, Tier 3, Uhuru, etc. — have built PaaSes atop the framework and some have quietly been mulling forking the Cloud Foundry code, citing lack of clarity about the project’s future. The attraction of the multi-vendor Cloud Foundry effort
