BlackBerry® evangelists met with Android™ developers last week at AnDevCon III in Burlingame, CA to talk about the cool development options of bringing Android apps to the BlackBerry platform, and how to publish them on the BlackBerry App World™ storefront to reach a global audience. The word of how easy the process is started to spread out quickly among conference participants at two full-house events on day one of the conference – the Lightning Talk presented
British electronics distribution specialist Context dropped a bit of a bombshell on Tuesday by claiming that Research In Motion’s (RIMM) PlayBook tablet outsold Apple’s latest iPad during the last two months of the 2012. Of course, Apple (AAPL) has its own retail stores in the UK where most in-store sales likely occur, but the sales channels monitored by Context still make up most of the electronics distribution in the UK.According to Context, the PlayBook shifted 160,000 units and the latest-generation iPad 113,000 units over the Christmas period, giving RIM a fairly substantial lead. All iPad models combined sold 203,000 units. Of course it’
One of my favorite things about working as a community and blog manager for BlackBerry ® is getting to talk to you and provide updates on our products. Each day on our social channels fans, followers and readers ask, when will BlackBerry ® 10 launch? It is clear you’re excited to get your hands on it, and we definitely can’t wait to get it to you. Today, I’m happy to report that Thorsten Heins, in a press release, announced that the BlackBerry 10 Launch event is to be held on January 30, 2013. The event will happen simultaneously in multiple countries around the world, where details of the smartphones and their availability will be announced.
We’re excited to announce that BlackBerry App World™ is now accepting applications targeted for BlackBerry® 10 devices. This means that apps submitted to the store starting today, October 10, are guaranteed to be reviewed, tested and ready for publishing when BlackBerry 10 launches in Q1 2013. This is a huge opportunity to be the first into the store and capitalize on app-hungry BlackBerry users. (Ed. note, Victoria B played Mexican Train Dominoes until 4am last night. We’re app-hungry too.)When you’re creating a new release in the BlackBerry App World Vendor Portal, you will now see a new Family called “BlackBerry 10” and one new device “All
Today, our UK office the opened its doors to developers with the grand opening of the first BlackBerry® Tech Center. Located in our Slough office, the BlackBerry Tech Center will be open weekdays from 9AM – 5PM, offering a dedicated workspace for developers looking to create applications for BlackBerry® 10. Our BlackBerry developer evangelist team will be on hand every day to provide expertise and guidance, with each day having a specific theme so that developers can attend on a day that guarantees the support that is most relevant to them:Monday: Native/Cascades™/QtTuesday: Android™ portingWednesday: BlackBerry® WebWorks™ and HTML 5Thursday:
I know, I know, I said that about Windows Phone too and Microsoft has yet to prove itself as far as the market is concerned. True, but at the risk of portraying myself as the guy who always roots for the underdog, I still believe both Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 have a good chance of making their way back to relevancy. Let me explain.Putting Windows Phone aside, since we have talked about that enough, lets talk about RIM and their chances of making a much needed comeback with BlackBerry 10.The OS is expected to be announced in a matter of days and I happen to have some friends on the inside (wow, that sounds um… more hardcore than it is.
Finally someone got it right! RIM is the first company that understood that there is no way you can be successful without having 4 things (and implemented all of those):
I just got back from the BlackBerry 10 Jam São Paulo and what I saw there was just awesome! I’ve been developing for BlackBerry since I got my Torch 9800 (just for fun) in March of this year and as soon as I started developing for it I saw that RIM was really committed to developers. They provide all the tools, SDKs, frameworks and support for you to create the most awesome apps.
The BlackBerry maker is counting a lot of mobile apps to be created around its forthcoming BB10 devices, but is it too late for a turnaround? Here's how Alec Saunders says he knows Research In Motion's strategy for consumer app developers is working: When someone approaches him at a BlackBerry Jam session with something already in the works."I'll have people coming up afterwards saying, 'Here's my code, see what I've done,'" said Saunders, RIM's vice-president of developer relations, who has been traveling around North America and elsewhere and speaking at the 26 so-called BlackBerry Jam developer events that have been held so far this year.
The latest YouGov report on smartphone brand perception and purchase intent is out, and this one is a keeper. According to the data, the proportion of BlackBerry owners planning to purchase a new BlackBerry (BBRY) within six months has rocketed from 18% to 43% since the spring of 2012. Over the same time period, the same number for iPhone owners has slipped from 92% to 85% while the number for Samsung (005930) Galaxy owners has ticked up from 46% to 53%. The interesting part here is how close the BlackBerry purchasing intent level is now to Galaxy’s level. One could argue that the iPhone slippage was unavoidable in the period after the iPhone
This video ran all around BlackBerry Jam while we were in San Jose. It shows off some of the reasons that developers believe in BlackBerry 10, and why RIM believes in developers. I couldn't help but notice the quote that says "We love that Alec Saunders grew facial hair to support BlackBerry 10". Obviously he's taking one from Kevin on that one since Kevin's hair is no doubt longer than Alec's beard, but we're all about a friendly challenge. Don't forget you can still get in on our #BB10Believe contest and enter for a chance to win a BlackBerry 10 device. All you need to do is send a Tweet with your reason for believing in BlackBerry 10!
