I’ve had a love affair with gadgets since I was in 3rd grade and I’ve been fortunate to grow up with many of them. The Newton, the PalmPilot, the Comaq iPaq, Treos, Motorola Phones, Sony Ericsson Phones, Apple iPods, iPhones and iPads, Amazon Kindles, Google slates, and Nokia devices have been a part of my life (I think Sony was also a big part of my life, but not in a “connected way”).I particularly enjoy using the first version of something. My first Kindle gave me a glimpse into the future of eBooks. The device I paid $400 for is now something you see everywhere and loved by generations that grew up without computers. The Newton, expensive

Microsoft's Surface Pro makes no compromises on Windows 8. It runs everything a mainstream laptop can.The Surface Pro's arrival is only a matter of weeks away, according to a tweet today from Microsoft. "On my way to the factory to check out #Surface Pro coming off the line...arriving in the coming weeks," tweeted Panos Panay, general manager of Microsoft's Surface products. This should be of no great surprise, of course. When Microsoft announced the Surface tablet last year, it said the Windows 8 Pro model would be available about 90 days after the release of the Surface RT. Surface Pro will be available in two versions and pricing will start

Windows 8 launched on the 26th of October so it’s only been on the market for a couple of weeks but StatCounter is reporting it has already surpassed Android when in comes to internet traffic. StatCounter aggregates data from a variety of sources, and as you can see in the image above they are saying there are more users surfing the web on Windows 8 than on Android devices. Of course that isn’t a big surprise, as the potential user base for Windows 8 is huge, but even so it’s pretty impressive for an OS that’s only 2 weeks old. As for Microsoft, the only thing they’ve said is that they had sold 4 million copies of their new OS but that was

Breaking: Damon Lindelof, Masi Oka, Marco Arment: On The Verge, Thursday!

Microsoft has started to update a range of its core Windows 8 communications applications ahead of the Release Preview debut next month. The updates, available in the latest internal builds of Windows 8, include UI improvements, new features, and drop the "app

Summary: Mozilla and Google have complained that Microsoft is competing unfairly with its decision to block their desktop browsers in Windows RT. But this isn’t 1998, and Microsoft can make a strong case in its own defense based on its own weak market share.

No, it’s not 1998 again, although if you just awoke from a 14-year nap you might think nothing has changed.

Last week, Mozilla Corporation accused Microsoft of giving Internet Explorer an unfair advantage over competing browsers

As we've seen, there will be no shortage of tablet / keyboard hybrids on offer when Windows 8 starts shipping this fall. But since those keyboard docks will typically be sold separately, that means you're also about to see loads of third-party alternatives. Not to be left out, Microsoft just announced a Bluetooth mobile keyboard, along with its smallest-ever mouse -- both of

Big companies filing lawsuits to protect their trademarks is nothing new. However, it looks like Microsoft once threatened to file a lawsuit based on the use of just one letter in a company's logo.

In a new post on the official blog of the University of California at Berkeley, Steve Blank, a lecturer at the university's Haas School of Business, wrote that back in 1997, he was part of a tech company called E.piphany. Their products included some that worked on web browsers such as Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

It’s been a while since the last 8 Days a Week article, but with Microsoft racing to deliver the Windows 8 Release Preview as soon as next week and my first draft of “Windows 8 Secrets” in the can, it’s time to once again take a look at what’s going on with Microsoft’s next desktop operating system.

First, the book. When last we met—two full months ago in 8 Days A Week: We Are The 25 Percenters—I noted that we were about 25 percent done with the book and that my goal was for it to come in around 500 printed pages. Since then, we’ve finished

Microsoft on Monday is expected to unveil new software features crafted to jazz up Office 15, the next major upgrade of its ubiquitous suite of office-productivity programs.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveils its "Surface", a new tablet computer to compete with Apple's iPad at Hollywood's Milk Studios in Los Angeles.
