WindowsPhone Central's Selections From the Web

While we haven't heard any official details, Nokia support via Twitter is reporting that they have identified the purple-hue problem that is occurring on some Lumia 900s. The screen irregularity is very obvious and easy to induce: simply disable automatic brightness and turn the screen down to "low" in Settings. Doing so on some devices will cause the grays to look purple throughout the OS.

We reported on this and other minor issues for the Lumia 900 a few days ago and

By now Nokia’s commitment to the Windows Phone OS should be well established. What has made their role so vital to Microsoft is not just the hardware they’ve created (4 phones in 12 months) but the support they’re providing to the platform from all directions.

Whether it’s original OEM apps, exclusive titles, developer support tools,

Football season is upon us and there are plenty of Windows Phone apps to help bring all the gridiron action to our phones. Sure, you have sports apps such as ESPN and Score Mobile that will bring your all the scores, news and videos from the sports world but what about those that just focus on football?

We've collected a handful of apps that place football center stage. We've got a few professional football apps and a few college oriented apps for those who prefer the NCAA over the NFL. We even toss in a football app for those who see football

Registration has opened up for the 2013 Microsoft Imagine Cup for sudents aged 16 and above. The technology competition is in its 11th year, and to more inspire students and encourage a wider variety of aspiring innovators to participate, Microsoft has redesigned the Imagine Cup to cover the World Citizenship, Games and Innovation. If that wasn't enough, the prize money has been raised to $300,000 (US).

We previously looked at the winners of the 2012 Imagine Cup, quadSquad, who created a company called

There is still a lot we do not know about Windows Phone 8. What we do know is that it will share many things in common with the slightly newer Metro inspired UI’s of the Xbox 360 and Windows 8. Let us discuss the recent trend with Microsoft inserting advertising into its products using metro tiles. These adverts are already present in Windows 8 and the Xbox 360. Will those advert tiles be making an appearance in Windows Phone 8 too?

The Xbox 360 has changed its dashboard of late so that it now actually displays a reduced in size game tile that sits in the top left hand of the main screen. The rest of the UI consists

Pre-registrations have opened up for the HTC 8X, HTC 8S and Lumia 820 at UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. On its website, all three Windows Phone 8 handsets are stated to be arriving soon, with November 2012 as an estimated month of release. No pricing has been provided as-of-yet.The UK retailer has displayed strong support for Windows Phone since the platform launched in 2010. Starting up Windows Phone 8 hype, the Carphone Warehouse previously detailed how it plans to offer a number of Apollo smartphones for consumers to choose from.As well as the absence of pricing, we're not sure what colours will be made available, though looking at images

For those of you who are looking to promote your Windows Phone app on the web, you’ll want to go grab these new virtual badges from Microsoft. The new design comes in 3 resolutions (125 x 40; 208 x 67; and 376 x 120), two colors (blue and black) and reflect the more Modern UI look that we’re accustomed to with Windows Phone including the new Store logo. In addition, Microsoft explains how to do the all important region-neutral deep link for the Store for your app. That’s the method we use here at Windows Phone Central so that the link will redirect you to your localized market.

In our recent review of Crimson Dragon Side Story, I called the fantasy-themed shooter “one of the best Xbox games on Windows Phone.” But I also noted a few flaws, like the wonky GPS feature and a killer save data bug. These problems make a great game slightly less so, especially for anyone who loses their save data to the whims of fate.Fear not, dragon riders! We’ve got more details and some good news from the developers after the break.Let’s go into a little detail about how GPS mode is supposed to work. By entering the game’s Trading Post, players can choose to Acquire jewels via GPS. The way it’s supposed to work is that you check in from

Fans of game developers Ubisoft, who are known for Assassin’s Creed, Fitness Evolved, Just Dance and many other popular titles on Xbox 360, will be pleased to check out their new companion app simply called Uplay.

If use Ubisoft’s games, you probably already know what it’s for but for those who don’t, Uplay is their system to provide a “wide range of exclusive services and free content" to their fans.  Basically you create an account and they give you “points” for purchasing things, keeping track of new games, getting extra weapons or features for your games, etc.
