techUK Outlines 2020 Vision At Interop London

Sue Daley, Head of Big Data, Cloud, and Mobile at techUK, laid out her organisation's vision for 2020 at Interop London today.

Speaking at the event, Daley said that while core trends like cloud, big data, and IoT have the capability to become huge growth drivers in the UK, there was much that still needed to be done.

“As an industry and a country, we must embrace change,” Daley said. “We must make it easier and not hard for businesses to innovate and come up with new ideas that might be the growth drivers of the future.” Her comments echoed those of Google’s Nina Bjornstad, who also spoke from the Interop London stage.

In March, techUK, the collective that represents hundreds of UK-based tech companies to promote innovation, published a paper outlining eight principles to guide the development of the European Digital Single Market. The principles are:

  1. Embrace change
  2. Embrace the global nature of the digital revolution
  3. Focus on making it easier, not harder, for companies to innovate
  4. Commit to making the world simpler, not more complicated, for people and businesses
  5. Leave room for innovation to overcome obstacles
  6. Be rigorous in using the right tools for the job
  7. Remain wary of unintended consequence
  8. Seek to move at pace by making rapid succession of practical and pragmatic small steps forward

Daley said that those same eight principles were key to ensuring the nation’s digital success.

“We must help existing businesses to grow but leave space for innovation,” she commented. “There are still bottlenecks in the system. Industry, government, and academia must come together to overcome the barriers that still exist.”

“If we enable the right conditions for these digital technologies to grow, businesses will become more agile, more mobile and more flexible,” she said.
