No Need For H-1Bs
With the major goal of most U.S. companies being to outsource their IT departments, why are they requesting more H-1B visas ("Appetite For H-1B Visas Far From Slaked," Sept. 7)? With all the outsourcing going on, you'd think they could find the skilled workers here.

Start Out Clean
Data quality has for decades been summed up in four letters: GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) ("Data Quality Is Everyone's Problem," Aug. 30, p. 8). If it began as garbage, it will forever remain garbage.

Sophisticated applications can and often will provide edits that make users aware of garbage data. However, that becomes increasingly difficult as data becomes more complex in its nature and variance.

The intelligence and ultimately the onus behind clean data is at the point of entry, and as so many things change in the world of information technology, one thing will forever remain the same: GIGO!

Linux Holds Its Own
In your interview with Sun Microsystems CIO Bill Vass, you mention that Solaris' multithreading capabilities "may at some point be adopted into Linux" ("Riding Open Source To CIO Spot," Aug. 30, p. 54) Happily, the Linux kernel has supported threads and symmetric multiprocessing since 1996. Simultaneous multithreading has been supported since December 2001.

Although Solaris' multithreading support really shines, Linux can already hold its own in the enterprise market as far as this feature is concerned.
