Unleash The Potential
The poll participants are right about two things: Another killer app is on the way, and it will transform business processes ("What's The Next Killer App?" Dec. 6, 2004). What they fail to see is that the next killer app isn't an individual app at all--it's the combined effect of a collection of apps that work together. It's called the real-time enterprise.
We IT folks need to stop looking for the next insanely great new killer app and start educating our companies about the potential that can be unleashed when we redesign workflows to be real time and then support those workflows with appropriate combinations of IT components. Business needs IT to put all the technology together and lead in the creation and operation of systems that enable the real-time enterprise to come into being.

If you have the ability to make a positive difference, you should. I never thought anyone in corporate America would follow that selfless path. But Hyperion has shown it's concerned about the big picture, and there are bigger issues in this world than the bottom line. If only the rest of the powerful corporations in this world could be so responsible.

Herbert W. Lovelace's article about the five rules for an effective IT strategy was right on target ("Five Rules For An Effective IT Strategy," Nov. 15, 2004). If you're really able to implement them in the workplace, then kudos to you and your organization.
